System Administrator/ Server Engineer

Nihonbashi, Tokyo · Information Technology

Own the infrastructure. Be the go-to expert on the ground.

We're looking for a hands-on System Administrator / Server Engineer to serve as the primary technical resource for our client: a European multinational financial data vendor - supporting their Tokyo operations from the inside.

It's a stable, long-term engagement where you'll split your time between keeping things running smoothly and driving meaningful technical projects forward. You'll work closely with global teams, but locally, you'll be the one people rely on.

If you like autonomy, variety, and knowing that your work directly keeps a business moving - this is the role.

Key Details

  • Location: Tokyo-based (On-site/Hybrid as required by local needs)
  • Work Pattern: Standard business hours (09:00 – 18:00)

Environment & Technology Stack

  • Infrastructure Size: ~20 servers / ~20 endpoints
  • OS Split: ~65% RHEL Linux, ~35% Windows Server
  • Virtualization: VMware (User-level familiarity is sufficient)

What You'll be Doing

Operations & Administration

  • Run monthly patching cycles across Windows and Linux environments (~6 key servers)
  • Manage and troubleshoot a compact but critical footprint: ~20 servers and ~20 endpoints
  • Provide desktop and user support when needed
  • Investigate and resolve application-level issues and server problems
  • Handle on-site datacenter tasks and minor admin duties
  • Coordinate with global teams across time zones

Project Work & Evolution

  • System Updates: Implement configuration changes, execute testing, and deploy system updates.
  • Migration Support: Assist with the migration to a new backend processing tool (including configuration, testing, and vendor/team coordination).
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation of the infrastructure, processes, and configuration changes.

Automation

  • Develop and maintain basic scripts to automate routine tasks (Python is highly preferred; Bash or PowerShell is acceptable).

Qualifications

Technical Skills & Experience

  • OS Administration: Strong, proven experience administering both RHEL Linux and Windows Server.
  • Scripting: Practical, hands-on scripting capability (Python, Bash, or PowerShell).
  • Virtualization: Basic operational familiarity with VMware.

Soft Skills & Language

  • Language: English (Fluent/Business level) is required for global team coordination. Japanese language skills are optional but welcome.
  • Autonomy: Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a small local environment.
  • Versatility: Comfortable wearing multiple hats, shifting easily between routine operations and project execution.
  • Communication: Solid coordination skills and a disciplined approach to documentation.

※ Applicants MUST be a resident of Japan and be available to work full-time in Tokyo.
